SMU comes into the championship game with an overall record of 11-5-1 and a four-game winning streak. The Mustangs defeated Florida Atlantic University 3-0 in the semifinal round to advance to the final. Wayny Balata scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the game to give SMU an early lead, and Eliana Salama added a third goal in the second half. Samantha Estrada made three saves in net to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
Memphis will look to carry its strong play into the championship game after defeating Charlotte University 2-0 in the semifinal round. The Tigers finished the regular season as the AAC champions with an overall record of 17-1, and they are looking to add the tournament championship to their trophy case. Anna Hauer and Mya Jones scored goals for Memphis in the semifinal win, and Kaylie Bierman made five saves in net to earn her 13th shutout of the season.
When SMU and Memphis met during the regular season, the Tigers earned a narrow 2-1 victory. However, the Mustangs are a different team now than they were in September. SMU has won its last four games and is playing some of its best soccer of the season. The Tigers will need to be at their best on Sunday if they want to defeat the Mustangs and claim the AAC championship.
