Cody’s teammates and coach believe she has the potential to be a great player. Alabama guard Loyal McQueen said, “I think Essence has no clue how good she can be. Every day I just talk to her about continuing to believe in herself and continuing to be aggressive.” Alabama coach Kristy Curry echoed this sentiment, stating that Cody has continued to grow and improve, bringing a great work ethic every day.

Despite being a top-25 national recruit, Cody remains humble and driven. She acknowledges her potential but understands that she has to prove it on the court. Her performance against Florida State, where she converted 8 of 12 shots, including several layups on pick-and-rolls, certainly caught the attention of many, including Texas coach Vic Schaefer. He praised Cody for her performance, noting that she didn’t play like a freshman and that the moment wasn’t too big for her.

Cody’s ability to set ball screens in transition was particularly noted by Schaefer, who said, “You’ve got to really have your head on a swivel or you’re gonna get pinned and you might get hurt. When (Cody) sets a ball screen, you can make two left turns and still only be halfway around it.”

Cody’s skills and performance have not only benefited her but also her teammates. Sarah Ashlee Barker, who averages 17 points per game and was named first team All-SEC, and fellow guard Aaliyah Nye, who averages 14 points and is one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in the country, have both benefited from Cody’s presence on the court.

The next challenge for Cody and her team is a second-round matchup with top-seeded Texas on the Longhorns’ home floor. Texas presents plenty of challenges for Alabama, with five post players standing between 6-1 and 6-4 and a strong season despite losing point guard Rori Harmon to a season-ending knee injury. However, Alabama is ready for the challenge, with Barker stating, “We know we have to take care of the ball a lot better. They take those turnovers and they push in transition.”

As Cody continues to grow and improve, there is no doubt that she will continue to make a significant impact on the court. Her journey is a testament to the power of hard work, belief in oneself, and the importance of teamwork. As she continues to shine, the basketball world eagerly watches to see what she will do next.
