The United States Women’s National Hockey Team got the 2023-24 Rivalry Series off to a solid start on Wednesday night, defeating Canada 3-1 in the first game of the seven-game series.
Hilary Knight opened the scoring for Team USA with just eight seconds left in the first period. The goal came off a rebound after a shot by Alex Carpenter was saved by Canadian goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer.
Canada tied the game early in the second period on a goal by Brianne Jenner. Jenner took a pass from Sarah Nurse and skated into the slot before firing a shot past American goaltender Aerin Frankel.
The United States regained the lead in the third period on a goal by Taylor Heise. Heise picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and carried it into the Canadian zone before beating Maschmeyer with a wrist shot.
Alex Carpenter added an insurance goal for the United States with two minutes remaining in the game. Carpenter took a pass from Kendall Coyne Schofield and skated into the open slot before firing a shot past Maschmeyer.
Frankel made 35 saves for the United States, while Maschmeyer stopped 24 shots for Canada.
The Rivalry Series is a seven-game competition between the top two women’s hockey teams in the world, and it is always one of the most anticipated events on the hockey calendar. The two teams have met in the gold medal game of every IIHF Women’s World Championship and Olympic Winter Games since 2005, with the exception of the 2019 World Championship.
The United States has won the last three Rivalry Series, and they will be looking to extend that streak in the 2023-24 series. However, Canada is always a tough opponent, and they will be determined to get back on track after losing the first game of the series.
The United States’ victory in the first game of the Rivalry Series was a solid start to their title defense. The Americans were able to generate a lot of offensive pressure, and they were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Frankel was also excellent in goal, making several key saves to keep Canada out of the game.
Canada will need to make some adjustments if they want to get back in the series. The Canadians had difficulty generating sustained offensive pressure in the first game, and they will need to find a way to get more pucks on net. Maschmeyer will also need to be better in goal, as she allowed three goals on 35 shots.
