TV Brasil makes investment worthy of Globo in its first original soap opera · TV News

Official broadcaster of the national government, the TV Brasil announced this Thursday (24) that it will produce its first original soap opera. The unprecedented project will receive an investment of R$15 million for the development of a work, which will have between 40 and 60 chapters of 52 minutes each.

This will result in a cost of R$250,000 to R$375,000 per episode, an amount close to that invested by Globo in its serials — the audience leader spends much more, but dilutes the contribution over a much larger number of chapters.

There is no prediction of when the soap opera will enter TV Brasil’s programming — as only the co-production notice was released this Thursday, the project should take a few years to reach television. The public broadcaster is currently looking for producers willing to create a new audiovisual work.

The notice does not make any theme limitations, but emphasizes that the soap opera needs to bring elements of Brazilian culture and society. It is also important that the proposal dialogue with the traditional soap opera format, “but without leaving aside innovation”, highlights the text.

In addition to the R$15 million contribution, TV Brasil will be able to make its studios and equipment available for recording its first soap opera. If the budget is higher than that offered by the broadcaster, the co-producer will need to capture the additional value — and include this intention in the contract.

The soap opera is part of a much larger project, worth R$110 million, which focuses on independent production for the public sector through Prodav (Brazilian Audiovisual Development Support Program).

The notice also includes processes for producing fiction series and animation aimed at children and young people; documentary projects about nature and the environment; filmsseries and documentaries about the soccer feminine; in addition to projects on society and culture.

According to the director of Content and Programming at EBC (Empresa Brasil de Comunicação), Antonia Pellegrino, this million-dollar investment is the result of work developed in partnership with Ancine (National Agency for Cinema) in the last two years.

“This record amount that we are launching is the result of the growth of the institutional partnership between Ancine and EBC, which has already gone through several phases. We have been working together for almost two years, strengthening ties, and in this partnership we were able to offer R$110 million to the field public”, she told Agência Brasil on Wednesday (23).
