After spending decades selling its soap operas and series to other countries, Globo decided to change its export strategy. Now, the conglomerate sells the formats of its projects so that broadcasters in other countries can produce local adaptations. The Others will be released in Greece and Germany, while Justice will also be re-recorded in Greek.
The information was confirmed by the North American Variety this Monday (21), during the Mipcom television fair. In Greece, both The Others and Justice will be shown on the Alpha TV network, one of the largest in the country.
The German adaptation of the conflicts in the Barra da Tijuca condominium will be handled by the production company ndF (Neue Deutsche Filmgesellschaft), but it has not yet been revealed on which broadcaster or channel the series will be broadcast. None of the remakes have a scheduled release date or cast.
Angela Colla, head of international business, content distribution and co-productions, told the publication that the idea is to expand Globo’s operations in the sale of formats, instead of the mere export of ready-made content.
“More than producers of series and soap operas, we are storytellers. With the strength of our content, we bet on the life of scripted formats as a way to amplify business possibilities and reach new audiences”, said the executive.
“Adaptations do not need to be exact copies. With [a venda de] formats, adjustments can be made to adapt a story to each reality, maintaining the creative structure that is the essence of success. We are excited to see how these productions can be adapted to other cultures”, said Angela.
Eye on the international market
Globo has invested heavily in the foreign market. In addition to exporting formats to other broadcasters around the world, the Brazilian conglomerate also decided to team up with international producers to create new content. The Fallen series, released last week, is an example of this.
This Monday, a partnership between Globo and the German Beta Film GmbH was also revealed. They will work together in the production of the Disciplina seriesnew creation of KondZilla (which made the phenomenon Tuning already Netflix).
