Former Umbrella Academy star faces military routine to join Lioness’ big cast · TV News

After stealing the show as Sloane Hargreeves in the third season of The Umbrella Academy (2019-2024), Genesis Rodriguez is the big news in the cast of Lioness series, which debuts its second year this Sunday (27), on Paramount+. To play soldier Josie Carrillo, the 37-year-old actress had to undertake an intense training routine.

“My God, the training was incredible! It really changed my life. I started training in February to gain muscle, and recording only started in May, so I had three months to literally create this character”, she says in an interview exclusive to TV News.

According to Genesis, creator Taylor Sheridan (the same as Yellowstone) asked her to gain body mass to convey Josie’s identity once the character entered the scene. “He said, ‘I want the audience to know what kind of person she is right away. She follows rules, she has a routine’. And I think you can see that before I even open my mouth, whoever watches it already knows that she is focused and disciplined”, emphasizes the actress.

And anyone who thinks that the star struggled to face the heavy training and that he couldn’t wait to return to a sedentary lifestyle is mistaken. “On the contrary! I’m very grateful to have been given this opportunity to get into the best shape I’ve ever been in (laughs). And I really love it! I discovered that I love lifting weights and feeling strong, it’s an incredible feeling!”, she says .

But the military isn’t just muscles and rules. She also has a fragile side, which she tries to hide at any cost — although Lioness’ audience may notice “cracks in her shell” as the season progresses. “I love that Josie has these different facets. Because, in real life, no one is just one thing! No one is black or white, we are shades of gray”, he philosophizes.

“But Josie has a lot of her profession: she’s a helicopter pilot, so she’s imposing, she talks really loud, you can hear her from miles away (laughs). Interpreting that, I discovered something inside me that I didn’t even know I had. There was an inner power, a strength, it was incredible to inhabit this space during the recordings. I already miss it (laughs).”

Newcomer on strong team

Main reinforcement in the cast of the second season of Lioness, Genesis Rodriguez joins a team that already has Nicole KidmanZoe Saldana, Morgan FreemanMichael Kelly e the daughter of Brazilians Laysla de Oliveira. Being the newcomer to an already tight-knit team was a little stressful, she admits.

“It’s always scary to join an established show, but I lucked out. This is the best group I’ve ever worked with. We really like each other, and I’m not even saying that just to say it (laughs). We hung out together weekends, when we weren’t recording, without even having to arrange it, because it was already implied that we would meet, you know?”, he remembers.

“So, for me personally, it was really cool to be with these people who really love being in each other’s company. But, on the professional side, I was already a big fan of the first season, so getting this role was a dream come true”, he praises Genesis.

The first two episodes of the second season of Lioness will be available on Paramount+ this Sunday (27), with the addition of a new chapter to the platform’s catalog every week. Check out the trailer:
