An important structural change captured by the 2022 Census concerns the greater percentage of women and black people as the main people responsible for domestic units.
Unprecedented numbers released this Friday morning, the 25th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that, in 2022, 50.9% were men (37 million) and 49.1% were women (36 million); a significant change compared to 2010, when the percentage of men in charge of households was much higher (61.3%) than that of women (38.7).
Furthermore, in at least ten states, the percentage of women responsible for the domestic unit is already higher than that of men. See the list below:
6 – Rio de Janeiro (52.3%)
Another significant change concerns race. In 2022, for the first time, the proportion of mixed race people (43.8%) surpassed that of white people (43.5%) among those responsible for domestic units. In 2010, the rates were, respectively, 40.0% and 49.4%.
The family configuration has also changed in recent years. From 2010 to 2022, the proportion of domestic units with a responsible person, spouse and children of both decreased from 41.3% to 30.7%, while the proportion of units with a responsible person, spouse and child of one of the spouses reduced by 8% to 7.2%. In the same period, the proportion of couples without children rose from 16.1% in 2010 to 20.2% in 2022.
