With Ana Marcela Cunha on the team, Brazil won, in the early hours of this Sunday, the silver medal in the Hong Kong stage of the Open Water World Cup. It was Brazil’s first medal in relays in the history of the World Cup. Australia took the gold, and the USA took the bronze.
The team was made up of Viviane Jungblut, Ana Marcela Cunha, Luiz Felipe Loureiro and Leonardo Brandt de Macedo and completed the course in 1:11:02:30, nine seconds behind the Australians.
The most common strategy in the mixed 4×1500 m race is to have women swim first. South Korea opted for a different formation and started the dispute with Jaehun Park and Junho Sung. As a result, the team finished the first leg of the race in the lead.
Australian Moesha Johnson, Olympic distance champion (10 km) on Saturday in Hong Kong, finished her part in second place. Brazil was in third, with Viviane Jungblunt. After the participation of Ana Marcela Cunha and Loureiro, Brazil remained in third, after Australia and the USA.
The Australians had a clear lead (around 10 seconds), but 17-year-old American Luke Ellis fell into the water less than 2 seconds before Macedo. The 18-year-old Brazilian, who is third in the World Cup junior rankings, gave his opponent no chance and was 21 seconds ahead.
The other Brazilian team, formed by Cibele Jungblunt, Isabella Tramontana, Lucas Machado and Bernardo Gavioli, finished in sixth place, with 1min15min22s70, among 11 participating teams.
