Carol, who Maria refers to, is João’s sister, who also lived in Bahia. In a publication made in September, the director said that João and his other daughter, actress Maria Carol Rebello, had moved to Bahia. ‘My loves, my puppies went to live in Baêa, I miss them here, but I know they are protected by Axé da Bahia’, he wrote at the time.
According to the Civil Police, witnesses reported that João was inside a car when two men on a motorcycle arrived and shot him at close range. The case is being investigated by the 1st Territorial Police Station (DT – Porto Seguro). Guides for forensic examination and removal of the body were issued, while steps are taken to identify the perpetrator and clarify the motivation for the crime.
A friend told CORREIO that Vunje, as he was known, was waiting for a friend when he was executed. Both would make a technical visit to Arena Trancoso, where a musical event would be held on November 9th.
“Vunje was waiting for our friend to make a technical visit to a party space that would take place on November 9th. He was standing in front of a supermarket. I found out [da morte] when she called me and said he had been killed,” he says. “Based on the number of shots, it looks like it was an execution. We speculate that they confused him”, he adds.
João Rebello was the son of actress and director Maria Rebello, and also the nephew of TV director Jorge Fernando, who died in 2019. One of the most notable roles in his career was in the soap opera Bebê a Bordo (1988).
He also stood out in productions such as Vamp (1991), Deus nos Acuda (1992) and Cambalacho (1986). Away from TV since “Zazá” in 1997, he participated in Globo’s ‘Divertics’ in 2013.
