In 2013, Vinicius Bustani presented his final work on his architecture course at Ufba and, as soon as he completed the task, he added a slide: it was an invitation for everyone there, including the professors who were evaluating him, to go watch a play in which he acted in, Mirror for the Blind. “I loved the course, but graduation felt like a funeral. I was approved with full marks, but the panel was sorry, saying they were losing an architect”, he enjoys remembering.

There, it was already clear to him – and to those who watched the performance – that his future would be in the arts. Today, Vinicius is reaping the rewards of having exchanged his architecture degree for the stage and film sets. Now, this 37-year-old Bahian is experiencing one of the most prolific moments of his artistic career: this year alone, two films in which he starred have already hit the screens and this Thursday (24th) a third will premiere in cinemas, the Bahian production Receive . Furthermore, Vinicius, who currently lives in São Paulo, is in Salvador to work as an assistant director on a film. Soon, a reality show for which he is also an assistant should debut.

His training as an actor was in the first class of the Universidade Livre do Vila Velha, created by Márcio Meirelles. Previously, I had taken children’s and amateur courses. With Márcio, he acted in several productions, in different roles, as the director preached. He even translated texts, as happened with Why Hécuba, by Mateo Visniec. Vinicius also remembers Hamlet, when he played his first protagonist. “I even learned to play the drums to do this piece”, he recalls.

The actor recognizes the importance of Universidade Livre in his training, but, in 2018, he felt he needed to take a more independent step: he debuted the monologue Criança Viada ou De Como Me Disseram Que Eu Era Gay, which was written by himself. In the montage, which mixed biographical accounts with fictional scenes, Vinicius used his own story with humor and sarcasm as a starting point to show the difficulties he experienced as an LGBTQIA+ child.

For Vinicius, the monologue “was the moment when the bird left the nest”. “The play was based on my story, it showed the process of understanding myself and being able to fully live my sexuality only at the age of 26. It tore me apart inside and I thought: ‘how can I talk about this?’. And theater helps me find meaning in things that don’t make sense with words alone”, observes the actor.

Even without sponsorship, the play ran for several seasons. “It was a minihit”, says Vinicius with some pride. At the beginning of this year, he returned for a brief season at Sesi Rio Vermelho. Now, the actor and screenwriter’s desire is to show the film outside of Bahia: “I want to do it in São Paulo. In fact, I’m not even saying I want to. I’ll do it!”, he corrects himself.

Although Vinicius recorded three productions at different times, they all reached the cinema this year: Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro, Filho de Boi and Receba. The first continues to be shown on the Saladearte circuit and this Thursday (24), it is Receba’s turn to debut. Filho de Boi is already out of print. “In Receba, I play a very Bahian police officer. For those who know the Bahian theater scene, it’s great, because you’ll see a lot of people on screen: Jackson Costa, Edvana Carvalho, Evelin Buchegger… For those who are from Bahia, it’s a breath of fresh air!”, says the actor.

Classified as a police officer, Receba has a touch of Bahian-ness, according to Vinicius: “There was no way to make a Bahian police officer without humor. We swear a lot in the film and there is this everyday thing present.” He plays Guiga, the protagonist’s friend. “I make a cameo, but I joke with the team, saying that all my scenes are in the trailer. But if it’s like that, it’s because they liked it!”, he laughs. Another film in which he plays should soon hit theaters, O Baldio Som de Deus, by Frederico Machado from Maranhão.

In audiovisual, Vinicius has also been experimenting, for about a year, with another role, in addition to acting as an actor: directing assistance. “I’m in love, because, to be an assistant, you have to know a little about everything. So, I talk to everyone, because you have to understand costumes, photography, production… because you need to make the director’s dream fit into the production”, he reflects.

Another production on which he worked as an assistant should debut on TV soon: La Maison, a transformation reality show derived from Drag Me As a Queen, which was recorded in Salvador. Vinicius also fulfills the same role in an Aldri film Anunciação, still being recorded.

But the theater is not forgotten and intends to put on a new play of its own soon. But this time, he intends to direct. “It deals with a topic that has crossed my mind a lot, which is work within the arts. It deals with how to make sense of the theme of failure, in a society that makes us believe that everything is possible, that we can achieve anything.”
