Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that more than 6.7 million Brazilians are obese, the result of a great challenge faced by the population in maintaining a healthy routine. The information also reveals that 1 in 4 adults is obese and more than half are overweight. But after all, what is the difference between these two conditions? This is what Fernanda Maniero, coordinator of the Nutrition course at Faculdade Anhanguera, explains below. Check it out:
Differences between obesity and overweight
Obesity occurs when the body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30, while overweight is characterized by a BMI between 25 and 29.9. Fernanda Maniero points out that both categories are risk factors for a series of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems.
How to prevent these conditions?
The key to preventing and controlling these conditions largely lies in healthy eating and adopting more active lifestyle habits. “A balanced diet is essential for the proper functioning of the body and the prevention of diseases. It should include a variety of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. Furthermore, it is important to be aware of the portions and quality of the food consumed”, explains the nutritionist.
Fernanda Maniero also highlights that, although knowledge about nutrition is essential, practice is what really makes the difference. “We need to transform knowledge into action. Incorporating nutritious foods into your daily life and avoiding ultra-processed foods are important steps towards health.” She also adds that nutritional education should be a priority. “People need to understand how to make healthy food choices, taking into account their needs and lifestyle.”

Importance of physical activity
The teacher also reinforces the importance of practicing physical activities. “Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing disease. It’s not just about aesthetics, but about health and quality of life”, he explains. For those struggling, small changes like choosing healthier options during meals and incorporating fruits and vegetables into your diet can make a big difference.
Finally, the professor emphasizes that it is essential to remember that the fight against obesity and overweight is not just an individual issue, but a social challenge. “The support of family and friends can be fundamental in the journey towards a healthier life”, he concludes.
