Pressured by the opposition and public opinion following cases of violence in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador, Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT) began to share, this week, the burden of the public security crisis with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Jerônimo Rodrigues, who frequently states that violence is a nationwide problem, began to attribute the crimes to the lack of supervision at state borders and, in public statements, has demanded that Lula take greater action in this regard.

“Sometimes, we play the role of intelligence. But there is intelligence that is created and does not depend on the state government. It depends on the Union. It is Lula’s responsibility. I voted for him, but I’m demanding him, asking him to do it. When information moves from one state to another, I have border limits. I cannot go beyond the limit of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás. The other governors do, but the Union must also enter”, he declared this Thursday (24), in an interview with Radio Sociedade.

This Wednesday (23), in an interview with Metrópole radio, Jerônimo also cited the President of the Republic. “I play my role. I ask Lula that we need to defend the borders, information passes at the borders. You have to have the intelligence to cut when it is from Bahia to another corner or from another corner to Bahia, when the weapons pass, when drugs pass from one state to another. Organized crime movements have intelligence.

Last week, Lula was in Salvador amid the public security crisis in Bahia. He did not speak about violence in the state, but said he intends to bring together the governors to create a public security policy that involves the three federal entities. The president also declared that he wants to forward the proposal on the topic to the National Congress this year so that it can be approved in 2025.

“We want us to be able to define the role of the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the National Guard, participating together with the state police. We need to have national coordination”, he declared, in an interview with Metrópole radio.

Serious problem

“(Jaques) Wagner himself acknowledged that there are indeed many complaints that the governor is not at the palace to respond to. He is also on the streets, traveling. In fact, Jerônimo, if you look at the assessment of his personal image, it is not a catastrophic thing, because he is a political leader of little expression. So, there is no big rejection. But the government’s assessment is a disaster. What the opposition is saying is that he does not govern seems to be becoming more evident every day”, analyzed the expert, in an interview with CORREIO.

Faced with criticism from the opposition regarding violence in the state, Jerônimo has complained about his opponents. In the interview with Metrópole this Wednesday, the governor mentioned the word “opposition” 16 times in an hour of chat.

Cases of violence

The Metropolitan Region of Salvador has seen days of terror. This week, the Santo Inácio neighborhood in Salvador recorded a night of clashes between more than ten drug dealers.

Last Tuesday (22), an attack by the Katiara criminal faction against members of the Bando do Maluco (BDM) in Cajazeiras 11 caused panic during the early hours of the morning.

On Saturday (19), five people who were in a square in the Sete de Abril neighborhood were killed in another violent attack.

Last week, at least five neighborhoods in the capital of Bahia had bus traffic partially suspended due to armed conflicts. The wave of violence follows the recent increase in homicides in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador, where at least 22 people lost their lives within 48 hours.
