Not long ago, Bahia witnessed a lively debate between two local maestros, over the fusion between popular music and classical music. On one side, there was Carlos Prazeres, from Osba (Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia), which promotes shows such as the Cineconcerto; on the other, Ricardo Castro, from Neojiba, who was excited when he found out that that orchestra would be performing classics from the national brega repertoire. “A circle of hell never before seen in this country”, defined Castro on social media.

And now, what will the two think about the show that will take place at Concha Acústica this Sunday (3), which will bring together grunge and orchestral music? The Tribute of Nirvana show arrives in Salvador. On stage will be the Argentine band Seattle Supersonics and the Villa Lobos Symphony Orchestra. The group from the neighboring country was created in 2010 and is made up of Ezequiel Diaz (vocals and guitar), Estevan Molina (drums) and Christian Monteiro (bass).

The trio used to perform alone and followed the original Nirvana formula, until they met maestro Adriano Machado, conductor of Villa Lobos. “We started this project a year ago and it was a great idea to do this mix with the orchestra. The maestro did a sensational job with the arrangements and it was a new way of working”, reveals Ezequiel.

Adriano Machado is the founder and musical director of the Villa Lobos Symphony Orchestra and has worked with artists such as Sarah Brightman, John Legend, and DJ Alok. He created other shows that combine the popular and the erudite, such as La La Land in Concert; Star Wars in Concert; Magic & Sinfonia Disney and Harry Potter In Concert.

Ezequiel prefers not to reveal his age and only says that he couldn’t “grow up in those years” when Nirvana emerged, in the grunge wave in Seattle: “But we really like their music and legacy. From the beginning, we created the band as Nirvana fans with great respect and a desire to pay as close a tribute as possible”, says the vocalist who adopts a hairstyle in the style of Kurt Cobain, leader of Nirvana.

The musician reveals that, although he sometimes receives criticism for combining the popular and the erudite, the idea was well received by his audience: “There are always people who don’t like the things that musicians do, but fortunately our audience is very faithful and was enchanted with our work from the first moment. So we love them and want more and more people to come to our shows!”, he says excitedly.

“It was a huge challenge to bring together something so different [o rock com o sinfônico]but we feel that at every show people are surprised by how beautiful it is to hear this mix. We always leave the stage very happy”, says the singer.

Since the 17th, Tribute of Nirvana has performed eight times in Brazil, in cities such as Ribeirão Preto (SP), Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília. The repertoire includes songs such as In Bloom; Drain You; About a Girl; Love Buzz and Floyd The Barber. The classic Smells Like a Teen Spirit, of course, is guaranteed.
