A fishing vessel with three crew members sank in the city of Caraíva, in the extreme south of Bahia, last Thursday (17). The fishermen were left adrift and were rescued alive three days later.
Named “Lucas Henrique”, the boat left Alcobaça and ended up sinking near Corumbau, around 16 nautical miles (30 kilometers) from Caraíva.
The Port Authority in Porto Seguro (DelPSeguro) began a search and rescue operation for the missing, sending teams to the high seas. The investigation was supported by the Salvamar Leste group of the 2nd Naval District Command.
A plan was activated to alert vessels sailing in locations close to the wreck, asking for help in the search. Many boats from fishing and nautical communities in the region mobilized, supporting the official operation.
In the main search, two official aircraft were used, one of them being a G-FLY donated by a member of the Sociedade Amigos da Marinha (Soamar).
The fishermen were located last Sunday (20), still alive and in good health. One of them remained in a kind of improvised raft attached to the sunken vessel, while the other two managed to swim to the beach.
After the rescue, they were treated by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), and taken to Hospital São Bernardo, in the municipality of Alcobaça. The situation has been monitored by the Brazilian Navy since the vessel’s disappearance.
The causes and circumstances of the sinking will be investigated, with the establishment of an Inquiry into Navigation Accidents and Costumes (IAFN), which will hear the three fishermen to clarify what happened. The case will be evaluated by the Maritime Court once the legal formalities have been completed.
In a note, the Port Authority issued a warning to navigators: “DelPSeguro reiterates the importance of complying, before suspending, with vessel maintenance procedures, as well as keeping all the salvage equipment provided on board”.
In case of emergencies at sea or on rivers, you can call 185 and access the Navy’s 24-hour service.
