The office of minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), closed this Tuesday (29) the testimony phase of the five defendants in the criminal action that deals with the murder of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, which occurred in 2018, in Rio de Janeiro.
With the end of the hearings, which were led by judge Airton Vieira, Moraes’ assistant, the oral instruction phase came to an end. From now on, the defenses and the prosecution will have a period of five days to request the measures they deem pertinent to the progress of the case.

The defendants’ testimonies began on the 21st of this month. In September, the witnesses listed by the defendants’ defense and the prosecution, which was made by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), were heard.
The last testimony in the process was made this Tuesday (29). Military Police Major Ronald Alves de Paula denied having carried out monitoring work on Marielle Franco’s routine before the councilor’s murder.
The soldier is imprisoned in the federal prison in Brasília and gave testimony as a defendant in the criminal action.
Asked by the judge who conducted the hearing about his participation in the crime, Ronald said he did not know the councilor, nor did he monitor her routine.
“With all due respect to the family, I had never heard Marielle’s name,” he said.
He also denied having any connection with the crime and stated that he spent the day of the murder at a police training course.
“I am innocent of all the charges imposed on me,” he added.
In addition to Ronald, the defendants in the case are federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão (no party-RJ), the counselor of the Court of Auditors of Rio de Janeiro (TCE-RJ) Domingos Brazão, Chiquinho’s brother, the former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro Rivaldo Barbosa and Robson Calixto, former advisor to Domingos.
All are responsible for the crimes of homicide and criminal organization and are arrested by order of Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case.
In the statements given during the investigation, the brothers Brazão and Rivaldo Barbosa denied participation in the murder.
According to the investigation carried out by the Federal Police, Marielle’s murder is related to the parliamentarian’s opposition to the interests of the political group led by the Brazão brothers, who are linked to land issues in areas controlled by militias in Rio.
According to the plea bargain of former police officer Ronnie Lessa, a confessed defendant in shooting the councilwoman with a firearm, the Brazão brothers acted as the masterminds of the crime.
Lessa and former police officer Élcio Queiroz, accused of driving the car used in the crime, will go to the popular jury this Wednesday (30) for the murder of Marielle and Anderson. The start of the trial at the Jury Court of the District of Rio de Janeiro was scheduled at 9 am.
The Public Ministry of Rio today defended that the accused be sentenced to 84 years in prison.
