The target of one of the biggest controversies of the Paris 2024 Olympics and gold medalist, boxer Imane Khelif will take a new step in her career. In a press conference, the Algerian athlete revealed that she will soon move to professional boxing, in the welterweight category, up to 66kg. In addition, there is a documentary being produced about the athlete’s life.

“I will soon enter the world of professional boxing, I have many offers. I will take this step very soon. We, as Algerians, would like to see our level in the field of professionalism”, stated the athlete, who also published on her social networks a video of her training, with the caption: “Before the spotlight, it’s all about mindset. Focused, closed, ready for gold”

Regarding the documentary, she revealed: “I want to share with you my success story with the social media family and with the young women who follow my life. A documentary is being prepared about my success story and will be shown on platforms international”, he concluded.

During the Olympics, Khelif was involved in a controversy when she was attacked after the spread of fake news that questioned her gender. She became a target shortly after her first fight in Paris-2024.

The confrontation ended earlier than expected because the opponent, Italian Angela Carini, withdrew in the first few seconds after suffering a blow to the face. She later explained that she had an injury to her nose and that the first punch increased the pain, making the fight impossible.

The quick withdrawal opened the door to false claims that Khelif was transgender. The fake news was fueled by a gender test that the Algerian and another boxer took at the 2023 Boxing World Cup. At the time, they were failed by the International Boxing Association (IBA). The entity is involved in several controversies and had already been disqualified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which rejected the credibility of the tests. The Algerian woman’s father went so far as to have to show his daughter’s birth certificate.

Before Khelif’s formal court complaint, Kirsty Burrows, the official responsible for the IOC’s protection and mental health unit, had already filed a complaint with French authorities saying she had received death threats and online harassment following a press conference in Paris at which she spoke in defense of Khelif. Under French law, crimes, if proven, carry prison sentences ranging from two to five years and fines ranging from 30,000 to 45,000 euros (from R$180,000 to R$270,000).

Amid the attacks, Khelif did not lose concentration during the Olympics and won the gold medal, becoming a heroine in Algeria. She became the flag bearer for the closing of the Games for her country. The World Boxing Organization (WBO), however, had to deny rumors that it had taken away the Algerian’s medal. The entity does not even have jurisdiction to do so.
