Recently five-time South American champion, Rio table tennis player Hugo Calderano debuted with victory at the WTT Champions Montpellier (France) and advanced to the round of 16 this Wednesday (23). Number 6 in the world, the Brazilian defeated South Korean Lin Jonghoon (30th in the rankings) by 3 sets to 0 (11/8, 12/10 and 11/3).
Calderano returns to compete on Friday (25th) at a time yet to be defined. He will face the winner of the match between Canadian Edward Ly (36th) and German Patrick Franziska (11th) scheduled for 11:20 am (Brasília time) on Thursday (23).
Our athlete beat South Korean Jonghoon Lim 3 games to 0 in the first phase and secured himself among the top 16 in the tournament being played in Montpellier, France.
Bruna Takahashi (18th), from São Paulo, the country’s only representative in the first round of the women’s singles, said goodbye early after losing by 3 sets to 1 (11/3, 8/11, 11/1 and 11/9.) for Chinese Chen Xingtong (6th). Last week, Takahashi was South American runner-up in El Salvador.
The WTT Champions Montpellier brings together the 32 main table tennis players in the world (men and women) and distributes 1000 ranking points to the champions, and 700 to the runners-up.
