After a few minutes of impatience in the fingers, something like abstinence, the hands realized that they were actually free. The fingers lengthened and touched the companion’s hands. Soon followed by the lifting of the neck and finally the eyes met. The whole body sighed. How long had it been without face-to-face contact? Neither of them remembered.

When the Wi-Fi goes down and emotions resurface

They lived together and only talked via WhatsApp. Until that fateful day when the battery ran out, the Wi-Fi went down and the power grid went out. Virtual conversations with their emojis now had to be translated by mouth, face to face, in the heat of the moment. It wasn’t that easy. Shall we have a coffee? Let’s go.

It was salvation. The walk. The bakery. The smell of coffee. The warm sensation in the hands. The ideas started to flow and they were finally able to talk. At first, short and telegraphic words. Then the language began to unfold, at ease, and the topics began to vary.

They realized that, as husband and wife, they rarely spoke in person. When night came, they even had dinner now and then in the shadows of conversations that were almost like family reports. Of course, between the nights of sleep and dreams, there were semicolons of love in the week.

But that afternoon the feeling was one of reunion. Not just with each other, but with themselves. It was as if, by disconnecting from the digital world, they had reconnected with what really mattered.

Reunion with others and with yourself

Time seemed to slow down and, in those leisurely conversations, they found memories of a past that still united them. Laughter began to emerge, shy at first, as if they also needed to get used to the absence of digital intermediaries. The hands, which used to type incessantly, now touched, squeezed, caressed. The intimacy, which had once been lost amid quick messages and automatic responses, reappeared, stronger and more real.

On the way home, they walked side by side, taking their time. There was no longer that urgency to check notifications or respond to messages. In that complicit silence, as the sun set before the affectionate presence of their clasped hands, they both knew they had found something precious again: the other as a gift.
