According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in 2023, the elderly (over 60 years old) represented 15.6% of the Brazilian population, even surpassing 14.8% of young people aged 15 to 24. The significant increase in the number of elderly people highlights the importance of nutrition to promote the health and quality of life of this population.

As we age, changes occur in metabolism, nutrient absorption and body composition, which makes a balanced, nutrient-rich diet essential. In this context, eggs stand out as a fundamental food for the health of people in this age group.

Nutrients present in eggs

Rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, eggs contribute to maintaining the health of the elderly, as explained by nutritionist Lúcia Endriukaite, from Instituto Ovos Brasil. “Eggs are an affordable and highly nutritious option, containing vitamins A, D, E, as well as calcium and magnesium, which are often lacking in the diet of the elderly. Furthermore, it is easy to prepare, which makes it easy to include in daily meals”, he highlights.

Data from the National Food Survey (2008-2009) shows that many elderly people face an insufficient intake of nutrients, such as vitamins A, D and E, which can contribute to inflammation and chronic diseases. “Combined with a balanced diet, eggs help to meet these nutritional deficiencies, promoting the proper functioning of the body”, adds the specialist.

Advantages of eggs for the elderly

Among the common problems in old age is the loss of muscle mass, known as sarcopenia. Egg protein helps combat this condition, especially when associated with physical exercise.

Another important benefit is the presence of lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that protect vision against damage caused by harmful light. These compounds are found in the yolk and are best absorbed together with the egg’s natural fat.

“Studies show that regular consumption of eggs increases carotenoid levels in the blood without changing cholesterol,” says Lúcia Endriukaite. Despite often being seen as a villain, healthy egg consumption does not harm your health. “Elderly people who consume one egg a day see an improvement in lutein and zeaxanthin levels, without a negative impact on lipid or cholesterol levels”, adds the professional from Instituto Ovos Brasil.

Furthermore, frequent consumption of eggs, combined with healthy habits, such as physical activity and a balanced diet, improves the quality of life of the elderly.
