For centuries, herbs have been widely used in the preparation of teas due to their therapeutic properties that promote well-being and support health in many ways. This ancestral practice, present in different cultures, reflects the search for natural treatments, reinforcing the importance of plants as allies in maintaining a healthy life.
“Some of them effectively help in the treatment of various diseases as they have stimulating, calming, diuretic, anti-inflammatory properties, among others. With its consumption, in addition to increasing water intake, we take advantage of the minerals and antioxidant substances present”, explains sports nutritionist Alfredo D. Landeau Bobadilla.
Correct water temperature
The benefits of teas are countless, but you need to use them safely and prepare them the right way. “Water that is too hot or cold can interfere with the correct release of the active ingredients of these plants. The appropriate temperature is that at the moment of boiling: when the bubbles start to release on the side of the pan, you should turn off the heat and pour this water under the plant”, recommends nutritionist Viviane Pereira.
Consumption care
Despite not having many restrictions, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women should only consume teas under medical advice. Another important factor is the amount of plant used in a tea: “The greatest care is in relation to the amount of plant that will be used, so that it is not consumed in excess or in less quantity than is recommended. The ideal is a dessert spoon, or the prescribed and/or recommended amount of the herb(s)”, warns VivianePereira.

Ways to prepare tea
Below, the nutritionist gives some care tips when preparing some teas:
- Teas made with leaves and flowers must be prepared as an infusion, that is, by immersing them in hot water;
- Some teas can be prepared together, both to enhance their action and to soften their flavor, such as chamomile and lemon balm teas, which have a calming action, or green tea with hibiscus to help with the weight loss process;
- Teas removed from the most resistant parts, such as bark and roots, must be prepared through decoction. In this process, peels and roots must be heated together with water.
Functions of teas
Some teas can also help with weight loss due to their thermogenic action, such as green tea. “To guarantee good results, it is essential to combine good eating habits and regular physical activity”, says Viviane Pereira. Other teas can also help treat bad cholesterol, liver problems, flu, sore throat, among other diseases.
