The mayor of Porto Alegre Sebastião Melo (MDB) was re-elected this Sunday, 27th, with 61% after a dispute against federal deputy Maria do Rosário, who campaigned with signs to the center and attempts to disassociate herself from the PT’s management. She was Minister of Human Rights in Dilma Rousseff’s government and currently serves in the Chamber.
His campaign, however, had participation from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva limited to sporadic appearances on television. He also did not address his experience in the Executive and sought to signal, for example, his commitment to balancing public accounts.
In view of the surveys released on the eve of the election that indicated a broad advantage for the current president, the parliamentarian recorded a video in which she receives a call from the first lady, Rosângela Silva, to Janja, and receives support from her and the PT member, who did not go to the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. time in these elections.
“President Lula and I will be here rooting for you a lot. We have faith that on Sunday, the 27th, the population of Porto Alegre will give President Lula a gift, which is his birthday,” said Janja. The gesture, however, was not enough to avoid defeat.
Melo, in turn, had the support of Jair Bolsonaro, but preferred not to expose him in the campaign. His deputy, Lieutenant Colonel Betina Worm (PL), is a representative of the former president’s group, but had little participation in the campaign.
The strategy is the same used by the mayor in 2020, when he was elected to office for the first time. He justifies the departure from Bolsonaro’s image and the customary agenda, dear to right-wing supporters, by the broad party coalition he carries. This year, it had the support of eight subtitles.
Melo and Maria do Rosário’s behavior favored discussions about city management. The floods that occurred in April during the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul were one of the main themes. More than 13 thousand residents of Porto Alegre were left homeless.
The opposition candidate tried, in campaign pieces and debates, to hold the municipal administration responsible for the floods. The mayor said these were the effects of atypical meteorological events and defended the carrying out of new drainage works to avoid new disasters.
