Some wagons of the Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) in Salvador and the Metropolitan Region will be adapted to the transport needs of seafood restaurants and street vendors.
The vehicles’ internal space will be modified and designed so that people who make a living from shellfish fishing can transport coolers and other materials used in the activity without competing for space with other passengers.
“We are confident with the progress of the work fronts and this was another request from us. We want to guarantee safety and comfort for our seafood restaurants and vendors. So, whoever takes their cooler, their cooler, their box, will have an appropriate place in the wagon, with safety and comfort”, says governor Jerônimo Rodrigues.
The subject was one of the themes of the meeting held, on Wednesday afternoon (23), between the head of the State Executive and the international management of Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), in his office, in the Administrative Center of Bahia (CAB), in Salvador.
According to the CEO of the Companhia de Transportes do Estado da Bahia (CTB), Ana Claudia Nascimento, “CTB remains committed to complying with the established schedule, with the expectation that, at the beginning of 2026, we will already have the first stretch, from Calçada to Lobato, in assisted operation”.
This week, VLT trains began arriving at the CAF factory, the equipment manufacturer, in Hortolândia (SP), to carry out static tests and technical and operational restoration. Adaptation studies for seafood restaurants will also be carried out and implemented in the review process. The trains, purchased by Bahia, are the same ones that CAF still manufactures in Spain. Some technological updates have been incorporated in the last ten years and will be updated in Bahian wagons.
The forecast is that the 40 trains will begin to be sent to Salvador in the second half of 2025. The vehicles will still have the capacity to transport 400 passengers – 77 seated seats and 323 standing seats –, accessibility and a collision protection system and run overs. The expectation is that by 2028 all trains will be in operation.
Last month, the implementation of the VLT made another advance, with the unloading of the first loads of rails at the construction site in the Calçada neighborhood, in Subúrbio Ferroviário. In total, the trucks transported 369 rail bars to the capital of Bahia.
The project covers three sections of trail, from Ilha de São João to Calçada, from Paripe to Águas Claras and from Águas Claras to Piatã. In total, the route will be 36.4 kilometers, with 34 stops.
