Vitória’s recovery campaign upon the return of the Brazilian Championship has reached a new chapter. After the two positive results in a row, against Red Bull Bragantino and Fluminense, Leão now appears with the 6th best performance in the second half of Series A, with 20 points achieved in the 12 games played. A feat that took the club out of the relegation zone: at the moment, the red and black team is in 14th place overall, with 35 total points.
The players who left the bench had a direct influence on this recovery. After all, they participated in almost a third of the goals scored by the team in the last 12 matches.
During the first round, Vitória finished with just 15 points won and the need to reinvent itself to save itself from returning to the second division in 2025. To achieve this, six reinforcements arrived with the mission of helping Leão. Between matches as starters and sporadic participations during the clashes, these athletes joined the rest of the squad to give coach Thiago Carpini more options.
“It doesn’t matter who starts, who has more or less minutes. Everyone is part of the process. They help to improve the level of training. I want to praise Vitória’s collective strength, which has been fundamental”, highlighted the commander.
The fact is that the red and black fans saw the reserves directly participate in five of the 16 goals scored by the club in the second round of Series A – a number that is equivalent to 31.3% of Leão’s goals in this period.
Coming off the bench, center forward Alerrandro contributed with assists in the matches against Palmeiras (for Matheuzinho’s goal) and Cuiabá (for Wagner Leonardo) in the first two games of the return. Striker Janderson gave the last pass for Matheuzinho to score against Atlético-GO, while midfielder Ricardo Ryller was Alerrandro’s waiter against Atlético-MG. In the clash against Red Bull Bragantino, Carlos Eduardo provided the assist for Everaldo’s goal – who, in turn, had also come off the bench.
In Carpini’s account, however, one more goal can be added to the list. In a press conference after the victory over Fluminense, the coach praised Carlos Eduardo’s effort to recover the ball and the pass in the play that ended with Matheuzinho suffering a penalty.
“Once again, I wanted to highlight, in the last game, Everaldo came off the bench and made the difference [contra o Bragantino]. In that game, it was Carlinhos. For me, the goal was his. [Carlos Eduardo] pressured four Fluminense players, this image is very strong. (…) What he did was the image of our recovery”, he praised.
While some have the opportunity to take the field and make a difference directly, others can help the team in other ways. With a short squad, Carpini highlighted that it is also necessary to think about those who are not managing to play their best football, such as midfielder Jean Mota
“Every opportunity they have to participate is more alternatives for us. We have a short group. I have a habit of not giving up on people. I know that Jean [Mota] It was criticized, but we don’t give up on anyone. He’s a hard-working guy. Just like Edu. We cannot discard people,” he said.
The defender even had the mission of replacing captain Wagner Leonardo against a direct opponent in the fight against relegation. Against Fluminense, the player won half of the duels played on the ground and in the air, in addition to completing 92% of the passes in the match.
“Particularly, it was a special day. Victory will always be the most important thing and it crowned our week of work, which was done very well by everyone. At the same time, being able to go on the field, contribute to the team by doing what I love most, is a source of great joy for me”, said the player about the opportunity.
