The region of Paraibuna, in Vale do Paraíba, in the interior of São Paulo, where the Abaeté company plane crashed on the night of this Wednesday, 23rd, causing the death of the five occupants, is beginning to be marked by a history of aeronautical accidents. Less than a year ago – on December 31, 2023 – a Robinson R44 helicopter crashed in the same region, killing all four occupants.
The most serious air accident in Paraibuna, however, happened 62 years ago, when two planes collided and exploded over the city, killing the 26 occupants of the two aircraft.
The crash of the Embraer 121 Xingu occurred at 6:39 pm this Wednesday, practically on the border between Paraibuna and Santa Branca, a neighboring city. The municipality, a tourist resort, is located in the foothills of Serra do Mar, with areas covered in Atlantic Forest and reforestation, which favors the formation of clouds and the occurrence of rain.
According to initial information, the plane hit a hill and crashed into a forested area – the causes are still being investigated. The place of the fall is a farm, in the rural Caetê neighborhood, on the side of the Fazenda Capela-Fazenda Caeté municipal road.
This location is 27 kilometers by land from the Lageado neighborhood, where the helicopter crash occurred on December 31, 2023. With four occupants, the aircraft took off from the Campo de Marte airfield, in São Paulo, destined for a helipad. Ilhabela, on the north coast of the state, where the victims would spend New Year’s Eve.
According to the initial investigation, there was bad weather and poor visibility on the route and the helicopter crashed into a eucalyptus plantation. The wreckage and bodies of the victims were only located after 12 days of searching, when they were spotted by a Military Police helicopter.
The worst air disaster in the history of Paraibuna occurred on November 26, 1962. A Saab 90 Scandia plane, from the extinct Vasp, took off at around 8:40 am from Congonhas airport, in São Paulo, bound for Santos Dumont Airport, in Rio. of January. The flight was part of the Rio-São Paulo air bridge and the aircraft, which carried 18 passengers and five crew, was scheduled to land in Rio in one hour.
On the way, the Saab plane ended up colliding head-on with a private Cessna 310, which was carrying two passengers and a crew member. The Cessna was taking the opposite route: it had taken off from Santos Dumont and was heading to Campo de Marte airport in São Paulo.
With the collision, the aircraft exploded, killing all 26 occupants. The debris fell in a marsh region, in the Pinhal neighborhood. Shortly after the accident, Vasp retired that airplane model.
Although the accidents in Paraibuna attract attention, it does not mean that the region is critical for aviation. Most air accidents happen near airports and are related to landing and takeoff maneuvers, the most critical moments of the flight, and the presence of birds and balloons in these locations.
The causes of the accident with the Xingu still need to be determined, but the bad weather in the region may have been influenced. An aircraft capable of operating with the aid of equipment generally resists a storm well, as long as other factors, such as technical or human error, do not occur.
Paraibuna city hall said that the city is on the route of planes taking off from São José dos Campos airport towards Ubatuba airfield. Some air routes between the airports of Rio de Janeiro and the capital of São Paulo also pass through the region.
The Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa), informed that it makes available to society, on its website, the Sipaer Panel, a platform updated daily, which allows the detailed visualization of data on accidents and aeronautical occurrences in Brazilian Civil Aviation, in the last ten years. In addition to this Wednesday’s occurrence, the panel records the helicopter accident in Paraibuna, in December 2023.
