The master was a capoeira teacher, singer and author of the book “O Pelé da Capoeira”

Natalício Neves da Silva, Master Pelé da Bomba, died at the age of 90. A capoeira reference, he was president of the Brazilian Association of Capoeira Angola, which is based in Salvador.

The news of the master’s death was announced by the family on social media. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Natalício Neves da Silva, known as Mestre Pelé da Bomba, a legend and iconic figure of Capoeira Angolaas well as an essential pillar of Afro-Brazilian culture”, says an excerpt from the note.

Mestre Pelé da Bomba was born in Governador Mangabeira, and dedicated his life to capoeira. “His presence and teachings inspired generations, leaving an indelible mark in history and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him”, concludes the family.

Pelé da Bomba began learning capoeira at the age of 12 on the Mercado Modelo ramp in Salvador, and at the age of 24 he was recognized as a master. Capoeira teacher and singer, Mestre Pelé recorded three CDs, a DVD and released the book “O Pelé da Capoeira” in 2010.

The Secretariat of Culture of Bahia (Secult-BA) released a note of condolence lamenting the loss. “With the swagger and malice of the great street capoeiristas in the history of Bahia, Pelé da Bomba leaves a great legacy for Bahian culture. SecultBa sympathizes with Mestre Pelé’s family and friends and wishes that his story remains alive and inspiring in Capoeira circles and the streets of Bahia”, says an excerpt from the note.
