Rainfall is expected to increase considerably in Bahia during the month of November, according to Climatempo. The projection of climate conditions was made at the third edition of the Climate Challenges Forum in Bahia, in Vitória da Conquista, in the southwest of Bahia, this Tuesday morning (29).

At the event, forecasts were presented for Vitória da Conquista and the Southwest region until the summer, a time when the area will be under the influence of La Niña, a phenomenon that cools the waters of the Central and Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.

During the next month, rains should return more comprehensively and above average, due to convergence zones that will affect the state of Bahia. In December, precipitation will be more spatially spaced, in addition to alternating between rainier and drier weeks.

Held by Neoenergia Coelba, the event addresses the impacts of climate on society, and explains the actions of public and private institutions in the face of climate adversities. The debates took place at Coelba’s headquarters, on Avenida Olívia Flores, and brought together experts from Climatempo, representatives of Civil Defense and the Fire Department.

“Climatic extremes are increasingly common and the adaptation of institutions to this new normal is essential so that the impact on the population is minimized. The entire process of mitigating these impacts must be based on climate projection, as with this study it is possible to anticipate the calamity situation”, commented Marcely Sondermann, meteorologist at Climatempo.

Investments

Based on rainfall data, Coelba presented an investment plan, which intends to allocate, by the year 2027, R$13.3 billion to works that strengthen the state’s electrical system and make it more resistant to rain.

“Investments in structural works increase the robustness of the electrical network and operational flexibility so that the distribution system becomes more resilient. In parallel, preventive actions are carried out daily in Vitória da Conquista and Bahia to minimize external impacts on the energy supply”, said Thiago Martins, technical superintendent of Neoenergia Coelba.

In the Coelba project, 10 thousand kilometers of the electricity network will be inspected by the end of the year, in addition to the pruning of 22 thousand vegetation close to power cables. 2,400 structural maintenance will also be carried out in the Southwest region, and afforestation projects will reach Vitória da Conquista.

The plan also includes a real-time electricity monitoring system, so that Coelba knows when there is a need to reinforce its teams in the area, and has more concrete data on practices to be corrected after electrical emergencies.

The idea is that, in extreme weather situations, the number of electricians in the field can be increased by up to three times.

The forum and the action project are instruments that aim to mitigate the impacts of climate change and increase the security of the Bahian population, according to Coelba.
