Princess Charlotte, 9 years old, daughter of Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton, is expected to lose the right to some titles because of a tradition in the line of succession of the British royal family
Charlotte received the title of princess because she was heir to the British throne and daughter of Prince William.
After the death of her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, she was given the title Princess Charlotte of Wales after her father, William, inherited the title Prince of Wales. This title is only intended for the direct heir to the throne.
When Prince William becomes the new king following the death of King Charles III, the title of Prince of Wales will pass directly to Prince George, William’s eldest son. The little one will become first in the line of succession. Charlotte, however, will not be able to become Princess of Wales.
Although the title of Prince of Wales is hereditary, passing from father to son, the title of Princess of Wales is intended only for the wife of the Prince of Wales. So the Princess of Wales will be George’s wife if he gets married.
Charlotte will be able to continue to be called princess and may even inherit another title in the future. She could become the Princess Royal, a title intended for the king’s eldest daughter or the king’s sister, which currently belongs to Princess Anne.
The title will become vacant and may be passed to Charlotte when Princess Anne dies.
