Politicians mourn Maguila’s death: ‘One of the greatest boxers in the country’s history’

Eduardo Suplicy, state deputy from São Paulo, was one of the politicians who paid his respects to the family of former boxer Adilson Rodrigues dos Santos, known as Maguila, who died in São Paulo this Thursday (24). He highlighted Maguila’s importance for Brazilian sport.
The boxer from Sergipe died at the age of 66. He had been hospitalized since 2017 at a clinic in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, and was fighting chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a disease resulting from blows to the head he received during his boxing career.
“I send my condolences to the family of friends of Adilson Rodrigues dos Santos, Maguila, who became one of the greatest boxers in the country’s history. As a competitor in the heavyweight category. We have good memories of his achievements in the ring on a day of mourning for Brazilian sport”, stated the politician from the Workers’ Parties on X (formerly Twitter).

The Ministry of Sports also commented on the death of the former athlete and said that Maguila leaves an invaluable sporting legacy, in addition to a career marked by achievements.

The Ministry of Sports regrets the passing of José Adilson Rodrigues dos Santos, better known as Maguila, one of the biggest names in the history of Brazilian boxing. Maguila passed away this Thursday (24), at the age of 66, leaving an invaluable sporting legacy and a career marked by achievements.
Born in Aracaju (SE), Maguila began his career as a boxer in the 1980s, and quickly stood out for his aggressive style and tireless determination. With a career spanning more than 20 years, he accumulated 85 fights, of which he won 77, 61 of which by knockout. He also won the title of South American champion and Brazilian heavyweight champion, belts he held for years, in addition to being the first Brazilian boxer to compete for a world heavyweight title.
Outside the ring, Maguila was known for his charisma and generosity, always defending social causes and using his fame to help those less fortunate.
The Ministry of Sports recognizes Maguila’s importance for national sport and pays its condolences to the family, friends and fans who accompanied him throughout his brilliant career. Brazil loses not only a boxing icon, but also a man whose fight transcended the sport.
