Candidate for councilor Edivaldo Borges Gomes, known as Irmão Edivaldo, from Ourilândia do Norte, in Pará, bought votes and forced his voters to go to the polls using ‘spy glasses’, to prove that they had fulfilled their part of the negotiation. The case was discovered by the police. Buying and selling votes is considered an electoral crime, punishable by up to 4 years in prison.
It all started when a poll worker noticed that some voters were wearing glasses with a built-in microcamera. Finding the situation strange, she approached one of the voters, a minor, who was carrying the object and called Electoral Court officials, who discovered that the glasses had a camera attached.
To the police, the poll worker said that “at one point she observed a voter wearing thick glasses. And, after a few moments, a teenager had the same object in her pocket.”
The teenager approached stated that an unknown person offered her R$200 to vote for the candidate for councilor Irmão Edivaldo, and that the amount would only be paid if she proved through filming that she voted for the candidate.
The candidate was arrested in the act and released after posting bail. He could be charged with the crime of buying votes and criminal association.
