The Public Ministry of Santa Catarina opened Operation Overlord on the morning of this Monday, 21st, against a group investigated for allegedly promoting hate speech, anti-Semitism, supporting Nazism and planning violent acts in different regions of the country. The group’s members identify themselves as neo-Nazi skinheads, using as their symbol an emblem associated with Nazi occultism and Aryan supremacy, with an AK-47 rifle in the center.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, those under investigation had a band that performed at neo-Nazi events, displaying flags with swastikas and hate speeches that “attracted a growing number of followers.” Some of the events brought together more than 30 people, the agency said.
Among the main targets of the operation is a man suspected of involvement in the murder of a young man from the punk movement in 2011. The crime would have been committed due to the ideology of the person being investigated. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, this ‘evidences the high level of violence encouraged by those being investigated’ He was arrested.
An Army soldier investigated for allegedly ‘actively participating in neo-Nazi meetings’ was also the subject of an arrest warrant.
The Public Ministry highlights that the soldier’s advanced knowledge of combat tactics and firearms ‘significantly increases the level of risk associated with his participation in the group’.
Agents took to the streets to arrest four people under investigation and search eight addresses in five states – Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Sul. The orders were issued by the 2nd District Court of Urussanga.
The Operation has the support of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) of the US Embassy.
Prosecutors reported that those under investigation call themselves neo-Nazi skinheads and adopt the Black Sun as their symbol – an emblem associated with Nazi occultism and Aryan supremacy – with the image of an AK-47 rifle in the center.
“This symbol represents, in the view of those investigated, both white supremacy and the glorification of violence, indicating the group’s willingness to use force in its ideological imposition”, says the Prosecutor’s Office.
The group held a ‘baptism’ ceremony for new members, investigators say. The ritual would aim to ‘strengthen internal ties and reaffirm adherence to extremist ideology, being considered crucial for the cohesion and expansion of the group’.
The name of the operation, Overlord, refers to the code name of the Allied offensive in Normandy during the Second World War, considered a decisive milestone in the battle against Nazism in 1944. That action went down in history as D-Day.
“Just as this historic operation was a coordinated effort to liberate oppressed nations, Operation Overlord symbolizes the determination of the MP and police forces to combat and dismantle neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic groups, reaffirming the commitment to justice and the protection of democratic values in our society”, indicated the Prosecutor’s Office.
