The massacre that left five people dead, among them a father and a sonin the Bosque Real subdivision, in the Sete de Abril neighborhood, was an articulated crime, where criminals probed the area before attacking. According to those who live in the area, a black vehicle stopped in front of the victims so that criminals could get out and shoot at them. The same car, according to those who live in the subdivision, was seen a few times during the week preceding the attack.

A resident confirms the investigation of the suspects and adds that, with the exception of Alan Veloso da Conceição, the victims usually stayed in the place where they became targets of shooting. “This car passed here three or four times, we noticed it and other people did too. At first, I thought it was an app driver, but then I saw that something was happening. That [o ataque] it was announced and the boys always stay in that part of the square, it was easy to catch them”, reports a resident.

Out of fear, those who spoke to the reporter at the subdivision preferred not to identify themselves. Another resident, however, claims that he also saw the car driving around the area. “As this is at the entrance to the subdivision, this car would go down, do the maneuver down there and come back. People said they realized it was a problem, but I didn’t even care about one thing because it’s peaceful here. We rarely see a problem with the subdivision, when it came it was in this situation”, he comments.

The circumstances of the crime are being investigated by the Civil Police, through the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP). A police source, who will not be identified, told the report that the possible motivation for the crime lies in what one of the victims was doing outside the subdivision. More precisely on Via Regional, on Vitória game days, when there is a large flow of movement.

“There are people there in the subdivision who were responsible for several robberies on Via Regional, especially when Vitória plays. From the subdivision to the road, it is about 12 minutes by car. They took advantage of this proximity to operate there, and this 17-year-old, Jaquinho, was in the middle of these criminal actions. In fact, this Jaquinho was the target of a shooting attack a year ago”, reports the police officer.

At the scene, residents confirmed that Jackson Oliveira Barbosa, 17 years old, the ‘Jaquinho’ mentioned by the police officer, was the first target of the shots fired by the suspects. When consulted, some of the residents, who preferred not to identify themselves, confirmed Jaquinho’s role in robberies. They highlighted, however, that Alan Veloso da Conceição, who was rescued before dying at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in São Marcos, was not involved in crimes.

There is no information linking the other victims to the crime, but residents commented that Jaquinho was even involved in robberies against family members of police officers in the region. According to the Fogo Cruzado Institute, which monitors armed violence in Salvador and the Metropolitan Region (RMS), 21 massacres have been recorded so far in 2024. The institute considers massacres to be cases of violence where three people or more end up dead.

Fogo Cruzado highlighted that, of the 21 records, 11 were recorded in police actions, as the organization also counts multiple deaths due to police intervention as massacres. In the 21 registered cases, 73 people ended up dead, 40 of them in these actions. Throughout 2023, the institute recorded 39 massacres that resulted in 159 deaths in the region. Among these, 27 occurred due to police intervention and resulted in 114 deaths.
