Peñarol spoke out in a statement this Saturday about the confusion involving the club’s fans in Rio de Janeiro last Wednesday, before the duel against Botafogo, in the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores da América.
Due to the episode, which caused several problems in the city, the Uruguayan club promised legal support to fans detained in Brazil. Managers are working to ensure that fans are released as soon as possible.
“Peñarol’s number one priority is to resolve the situation of the detained fans so that they can return as quickly as possible. That is why the club has assumed responsibility for the costs of the legal defense of those detained and the return of fans whose bus was set on fire”, said Peñarol in a note.
The Uruguayan club also criticized the organization that preceded the match against Botafogo and the actions of the Brazilian police.
“It is not the first time that acts of this type have occurred in Brazil, but never before of this magnitude. Peñarol will be energetic in making these situations visible to the institutions that have suffered in recent times so that this changes once and for all”, he continued .
Botafogo won the first leg of the Libertadores semi-finals against Peñarol 5-0 at the Nilton Santos stadium. The return clash takes place next Wednesday, at the Campeón del Siglo stadium.
