Botafogo’s 5-0 rout of Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores semi-final ended in confusion, just as it was this Wednesday with Uruguayan fans in Rio de Janeiro. At the end of the match, members of the visiting fans vandalized part of the southern sector of the Engenhão stadium.
Images from TV Globo broadcasting the match showed the moment in which a Peñarol fan threw a chair towards agents working on match security. Afterwards, a police officer hits him with a baton, and other members of the crowd try to defend him.
There was an argument, with no record of new attacks. Hours earlier, in the afternoon, 200 Uruguayans were arrested for their involvement in a clash with Rio’s Military Police (PM), said governor Cláudio Castro.
On the field, the game was also tumultuous. There was confusion in the first minute of the match. Eduardo Darias and Alex Telles got tangled up, which led to disagreements between several athletes from both teams. At the end of the match, the Uruguayans tried another mess, but the Botafoguenses ignored it and went to celebrate with the fans.
The return game takes place on Wednesday, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at the Campeón del Siglo stadium, in Montevideo. Botafogo will advance to the final even if they lose by up to four goals. On the other side of the bracket, Atlético-MG has a three-goal lead against River Plate and visits the Argentine team, in Buenos Aires, at the Monumental de Núñez, next Tuesday, also at 9:30 pm.
