Real Madrid demonstrated its indignation with the alleged defeat of Vinícius Júnior in the Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded this Monday. The Spanish club considered that it would be disrespectful for the Brazilian player not to win this year’s award. Therefore, he decided not to attend the event to be held in Paris.
“The Ballon d’Or no longer exists for us,” the Spanish club reportedly told Spanish newspaper Marca. The Spanish team would send a delegation of 50 people to the French capital, for the award ceremony. However, the club reportedly received information that Vini Jr. would not be the winner of the award and decided to organize a boycott of the event. No players from the squad will attend the event.
Considered the big favorite for the award, Vini Jr. won the Spanish Championship and the Champions League in the last European season with the Madrid team. Many Spanish newspapers already highlighted the Brazilian’s victory in the award.
The supposed winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or would be Spanish midfielder Rodri, who was part of the squad that won this year’s European Championship and was considered the best player of the edition. Organized by France Football magazine, the award this time received support from UEFA, which organizes the European national team tournament.
As a result of the feeling of injustice, Real Madrid also canceled a broadcast about the Ballon d’Or on its official channel, RMTV.
In addition to Vini Jr., other names from Real Madrid – which is also competing for best men’s team – are competing for awards. Carlo Ancelotti, the team’s coach, could win as best men’s coach. Arda Güler competes as best young player and Andreï Lounine as best goalkeeper. Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, Kylian Mbappé and Antonio Rüdiger are fighting for the Ballon d’Or, just like the Brazilian.
