An app driver died and five other people were injured after a shooting closed Avenida Brasil, one of the main expressways in Rio de Janeiro, this Thursday morning (24). The shooting occurred during a Military Police operation in the Israel Complex, which includes five communities under the control of drug traffickers.

The PM reported that, upon arriving at the Cinco Bocas, Pica Pau and Cidade Alta communities, the police faced strong resistance from criminals. Therefore, they decided to stop the operation and left the communities.

“The troops faced strong resistance from criminals and difficulty advancing on the ground because of the ditches they dig. There are reports that criminals, in an attempt to escape, started shooting and that is why there was a need to interrupt the flow of Avenida Brasil and the Supervia branches,” said Lieutenant Colonel Cláudia Moraes, PM spokesperson.

The intense shooting began around 7am, blocking the avenue, which only began to be opened around 9:40am, using the “go and stop” model. The circulation of buses that cross the region and Supervia trains and some railway stations were closed and there was a reduction in the number of vehicles leaving.

Afraid of gunshots, many drivers and passengers sought protection on the walls of Avenida Brasil.

App driver, Paulo Roberto de Souza, 60 years old, was admitted to the Dr. Moacyr Rodrigues do Carmo Municipal Hospital already dead. He was shot in the head.

A bus passenger was shot after a shot went through the window. Renato Oliveira, 48 years old, was also hit in the head. He was treated at the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital (HFB).
