New numbers from the 2022 Demographic Census released this Friday, 25th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), show that, although the percentage of same-sex couples is still very low in relation to the general population, there has been an increase significant in the last 12 years.
In 2022, domestic units made up of a responsible person and a spouse or partner of the same sex represented 0.54% of the total. But the growth was significant. In 2010, the percentage was 0.1%. The number of this type of domestic unit increased from 59,957 in 2010 to 391,080 in 2022. The Census also recorded a significant drop in domestic units formed by a guardian and spouse or partner of a different sex: from 65.3% to 57.5%, in same period.
The highest proportions of domestic units where same-sex couples live were in the Federal District (0.76%), Rio de Janeiro (0.73%) and São Paulo (0.67%). The lowest proportions were recorded in Piauí (0.25%), Maranhão (0.30%) and Tocantins (0.31%).
The increase in this period is consistent with the history of gay marriage in Brazil. In 2011, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) equated homoaffective and heteroaffective stable unions. Two years later, in 2013, the National Council of Justice published a resolution authorizing civil marriage.
Data from the National Association of Natural Persons Registrars (Arpen-Brasil) reveal that, since 2013, Brazil has been registering, on average, 7,600 same-sex marriages per year, 56% of which are between women and 44% between men.
