Although they represent only 0.34% of family compositions in Bahia, the number of same-sex couples living in the same household has multiplied approximately six times in twelve years. In 2010, there were 3.02 thousand arrangements formed by same-sex couples, which represented 0.07% of the total. While in 2022, the number was 17.02 thousand. The data are from the 2022 Census, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Friday (25).

The significant increase may be a reflection of the legalization of same-sex unions, which occurred in 2013. “So, this is also very beneficial. I mean, it was during this period between censuses that this happened. And we have this very large number of people who formally recognize this union, who are there with another type of configuration”, explained Mariana Viveiros, information dissemination supervisor at IBGE in Bahia.

In the national ranking, the state fell in this indicator: from the 8th lowest proportion of households with same-sex couples in 2010 to the 4th lowest in 2022, above only Piauí (0.25% of households with same-sex couples), Maranhão ( 0.30%) and Tocantins (0.31%).

Brazil

In Brazil, in 2022, there were 391.08 thousand same-sex couples, which represented 0.54% of the country’s total household compositions. Compared to 2010, when 59.95 thousand same-sex couples were counted (0.10% of the total number of domestic arrangements), the number almost multiplied by seven. There were significant increases in this total in all states during the period.

Federal District (0.76%), Rio de Janeiro (0.73%) and São Paulo (0.67%) had, in 2022, the highest proportions of households with same-sex couples. In Salvador, the 2022 Census counted 6.75 thousand same-sex couples, which represented 0.70% of the total number of domestic units. The number of same-sex couples quadrupled in the municipality, compared to 2010, when there were 1.59 thousand, representing 0.19% of the total number of domestic arrangements.

Even so, Salvador also fell in the ranking of capitals, for this indicator, from 11th highest participation in 2010 to 20th in 2022. Florianópolis/SC (1.29%), Fortaleza/CE (1.08%) and João Pessoa/PB (0.98%) had, in 2022, the highest proportions of households where there were same-sex couples. Teresina/PI (0.46%), São Luís/MA (0.55%), Boa Vista/RR (0.55%) and Rio Branco/AC (0.55%) had the lowest percentages.

In Bahia, Salvador (0.70%) had the 3rd highest percentage of households with same-sex couples, below only Macururé (1.07%), which led the state, and Lauro de Freitas (0.71%). In 2022, same-sex couples were not counted in 17 of the 417 municipalities in Bahia (4.1%).
