Pasta consumption in Brazil grew 5.6% from January to August this year, with sales volume reaching 875,938 tons. In the same period of 2023, this volume was 829,294 tons, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Biscuit, Pasta and Industrialized Bread & Cake Industries (Abimapi). According to the balance, the North and Northeast regions lead consumption, with 261,149 tons sold, with common pasta responsible for 40.29% of revenue in the regions.

The data also shows that, in the Southeast, the metropolitan region of São Paulo consumed 76,005 tons, with semolina with eggs representing 38.63% of this revenue. In the Central-West, consumption reached 59,397 tons, with semolina being responsible for 34.47% of the category’s revenue. In the South, 148,486.6 tons were consumed, with emphasis on noodles, representing 25.3% of revenue in the instant pasta segment.

“Pasta is a food that crosses cultural and socioeconomic boundaries, consolidating itself as a frequent choice for Brazilian meals,” said the executive president of Abimapi, Claudio Zanão.

That’s why, according to him, World Macaroni Day has been celebrated in Brazil for ten years, after the then President of the Republic Dilma Roussef established the date as a commemorative date.

According to Abimapi, the date has become relevant for the pasta sector in the country, because it celebrates the versatility and importance of pasta in the global diet, being one of the most consumed foods in Brazil, both for its nutritional value and its affordable price.

The entity also notes that the growing demand for healthier and more functional pasta drives innovation in the industry, with gluten-free, whole grain and protein-rich products gaining space in supermarkets.

“Consumers are more aware of their health and, in response, the industry is investing in new lines that combine flavor and nutritional benefits,” explained Zanão.
