Students and teachers from Escola Municipal João Lino, in the Historic Center, gathered to watch the inauguration of the new unit, this Tuesday (22). With capacity for 200 Early Childhood Education students, the school was renovated and now has six air-conditioned classrooms, a toy library, PCD toilets, a multipurpose room, pantry, kitchen, rest room and pantry. Six more schools should be delivered by the end of the year.
The unit operated for around 50 years, on Rua Maciel de Cima, and the change was an old request from the community. The school was moved to Rua do Bispo, close to Cruzeiro de São Francisco, in a building where a health unit previously operated. Another change is that school will now be full-time. Mayor Bruno Reis (União Brasil) officially inaugurated the space.
“The old school operated in precarious conditions and no longer met the demand that existed. We looked for another property and listened to the community to execute this project. Therefore, we restored all this architectural heritage to preserve our history. This also strengthens our strategy of occupying public buildings in the Historic Center, expanding service offerings and the presence of public authorities to help rescue and revitalize this region”, stated Bruno Reis.

The total area of the new building is 650 square meters. There are four floors, with the top floor being dedicated to a common space for students. The director of the new João Lino Municipal School, Ana Rita Natividade, stressed that adequate space is important in the children’s learning process.
“We worked on the ground floor of the Instituto Kardecista da Bahia, an act of great generosity by the spiritist center, but the physical structure was not suitable for offering education, especially early childhood education, because young children learn by practicing, they need to experience pedagogical activities, and it was very difficult there,” he said.
Another six schools should be delivered by the end of the year. The municipal secretary of Education (Smed), Thiago Dantas, said that the goal is to end 2024 with at least 80% of the schools in the network air-conditioned, he said that he has adapted units to receive air-conditioning devices and that he is waiting for Coelba to complete studies of increased loads on the structures that will be benefited.
“We bought air conditioning units and many are already in schools awaiting load studies. Six more schools will be completed by the end of the year, in neighborhoods such as Lapinha, Mata Escura, Cabula and São Caetano”, he said.
The secretary also commented on the impact of the increase in violence on education. Last week, five neighborhoods were left without public transport due to crime and schools had to suspend classes.
“It’s one of the most difficult and serious situations we face, because public safety has an impact on people’s feelings. When they don’t feel safe, this impacts the attendance and well-being of educators and, unfortunately, we have to deal with this situation that It causes negative impacts and interference in the education process. We regret it and hope that action will be taken,” he said.
