The Public Ministry of Bahia (MP-BA) opened an indictment against five men involved in the murder of chief Lucas Santos de Oliveira, which occurred in December 2023 in the municipality of Pau Brasil, south of the state. The complaint was received by the Camacã Criminal Court.
At the request of the Special Action Group to Combat Criminal Organizations and Criminal Investigations of the MPBA (Gaeco), the preventive detention of the accused Amatiry Fernandes Santos and Emerson Farias Fernandes, who are at large, and Michael Cardoso de Oliveira, Sandoval Barros dos Santos and Fábio Santos Possidônio. The case was investigated by the Land Conflict Coordination (CCF) of the Civil Police.
Motivation of the crime
Investigations indicate that the homicide was planned and carried out by the group, which, for the most part, is part of a criminal faction involved in drug trafficking in southern Bahia. The crime was allegedly ordered from within the Itabuna Prison by Fábio Possidônio and committed in reprisal for the chief having collaborated with the Police in denouncing organized crime and drug trafficking in the Caramuru Catarina Paraguaçu Territory region, according to the MP.
The dispute for the position of director of the Gerson de Souza Melo Pataxó State College also contributed to Lucas de Oliveira being considered a rival to drug traffickers. The indigenous leadership was against the result of the election for the school unit’s management, due to alleged irregularities in the process regarding indigenous traditions. For this reason, he was appointed as the police informer of trafficking.
On December 21, 2023, when Lucas was moving from the city to the Caramuru indigenous village, he was intercepted by two criminals on a local road and murdered in the back, with 15 gunshots.
Leadership
The chief fought for the defense of indigenous rights and was a community leader, serving as chief of the Pataxó Hã Hã Hãe People, Regional coordinator of the United Movement of Indigenous Peoples and Organizations of the State of Bahia (Mupoiba), State counselor for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Bahia (Copiba), president of the Municipal Directory of the Rede Sustentabilidade Party, indigenous community health agent, sports mobilizer and defender of indigenous school education.
