Nicolas Martinelli, Minister of the Interior of Uruguay, made a request to the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) for the match between Botafogo and Peñarol to receive only fans in the stadium, as he believes that there are no safety conditions for the people of Botafogo after the conflicts that occurred in Rio de Janeiro, last week, for the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final, won by the black and white club 5-0.
In a statement released this Monday, Martinelli reinforced the issue of security as the main reason for the determination. “In view of the violent incidents that occurred in Rio de Janeiro during the first leg of the Copa Libertadores between Peñarol and Botafogo, we decided to prohibit the entry of Botafogo fans into the Campeón Del Siglo Stadium, in the second leg in Montevideo” said the minister, who also completed.
“This measure responds to security reasons and seeks to avoid further disturbances between fans of both teams. The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to security at public events and guarantees that it will take all necessary measures to ensure that the event runs without incident.”
Botafogo has not yet commented on the case, but should advise its fans not to go to Montevideo due to fear of retaliation for everything that happened in Rio de Janeiro last week. Conmebol has also not yet issued any official note on the case.
On October 23, Peñarol fans staged scenes of violence on Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach and vandalized vehicles close to the location. Furthermore, they clashed with military police and clashed with traders. Chairs and tables from kiosks were used as weapons by the Uruguayans. A bus was completely burned down in the confusion. 21 men were detained in preventive custody.
During the game, fans broke chairs at the Engenhão stadium and got involved in conflicts with agents working for security at the venue.
Botafogo and Peñarol face each other this Wednesday (30), in the second leg of the Libertadores semifinal. The match will be at the Campeón Del Siglo Stadium, at 9:30 pm.
