After the resounding success of the series Monsters: Menendez Brothers – Killers of Their Parents, the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez once again became one of the most talked about topics on social media and was reevaluated by the courts.
George Gascón, the Los Angeles County prosecutor responsible for the case, said the brothers’ sentence review will be completed by the end of the week. “There are really two different groups in my office. I have a group of people, including some who were involved in the original trial, who are firm in the position that they should spend the rest of their lives in prison and that they have not been molested. In the meantime , I have others in the office who believe that, in fact, they were probably molested and that they deserve some relief,” he told CNN.
He also admitted that the review of the case happened because of the excitement and appeal of the second season of Ryan Murphy’s series. In addition to the series, Netflix also released the documentary The Case of the Menendez Brothers.
The prosecutor said he was under pressure to show leniency to Lyle and Erik and find new evidence that could prove the sexual abuse allegations. The decision will result in a hearing, initially scheduled for November 26th. Depending on the decision, the Menendez brothers’ sentence could be reduced or annulled.
Gascón further stated that his team has “a moral and ethical obligation to review what is being presented to us and then make a determination as to whether they deserve a reevaluation of the sentence, even though they clearly were the killers.”
Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in 1996. At the time, prosecutors alleged that the two committed the crime because of their inheritance. The brothers, however, argue that they killed their parents out of “fear” and that they suffered a series of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. The two are serving life sentences without the right to parole.
