McDonald’s loses $14 billion after bacteria contamination

Contamination caused by bacteria that infected one of McDonald’s sandwiches in the United States generated billion-dollar losses for fast food in New York. There was a 6.15% drop in the company’s shares this Wednesday (23), which marks the group’s worst performance since March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic.
McDonald’s lost about $14 billion, falling from $225.74 billion to $221.5 billion. The contamination spread across populous North American states such as Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the damage was due to an outbreak of the bacteria E. coli in the “Quarterão” sandwich, one of the franchise’s most famous and requested. As a result of the contamination, 49 people fell ill, and 10 needed to be hospitalized.

The main suspicion of the investigations is that the illnesses manifested are connected to the sliced onions in the sandwich, which come from a single supplier and arrive at three distribution centers, according to the director of supply chain at McDonald’s in North America, Cesar Piña, according to CNN. Currently, Quarterão is being temporarily withdrawn from supply in states that have experienced contamination.
