The Mataripe Refinery, one of the largest industrial assets in Brazil, celebrates 74 years of operation with a milestone of modernization and renovation. Since Acelen took over its management in 2021, the unit has stood out not only for its productive excellence, but also for its technological and socio-environmental advances, consolidating itself as a reference model in Latin America.

With more than R$2 billion invested in infrastructure recovery and automation, the refinery, which accounts for 14% of the country’s refining capacity and 42% in the Northeast, is now among the most efficient and sustainable in the region. The modernization brought a series of operational improvements, from changing equipment to automating processes, which expanded the refinery’s production capacity. “From the beginning of our management, we outlined a plan that involved making the refinery safer, sustainable and competitive”, highlights Celso Ferreira, vice-president of Operations at Acelen.

“Our purpose is to be an agent of the evolution of the new Brazilian energy scenario, always acting with operational excellence and innovating with a focus on a more sustainable world”

Celso Ferreira,

Vice President of Operations at Acelen

With these investments, the refinery’s production jumped from an average of 207 thousand barrels per day in 2021 to the current 250 thousand barrels, in addition to the launch of five new products, such as marine diesel and solvents. Acelen’s portfolio now has more than 30 products, strengthening its position in the Latin American market and reaching more than 83 production records since the beginning of the new management. “We will continue to invest in research, exchange of experiences, professional qualification and modernization of our structures, we aim to achieve more efficient energy alternatives for society and the planet”, highlights Ferreira.

Economic impact and job creation

In addition to technological advances, the refinery plays a crucial role in the Bahian economy. As the second largest exporter in the state, the operation contributes 17% of Bahia’s ICMS and represents 10% of local GDP. The increase in production capacity not only strengthens Bahia’s competitiveness in the national and international oil market, but also boosts regional development.

Between 2021 and 2024, the refinery’s workforce grew by 28%, with 15% of hires coming from nearby communities, such as Candeias and Madre de Deus. This commitment to valuing local labor has been one of the pillars of Acelen’s management, which, in addition to generating employment opportunities, invests in training and professional development programs.

Leadership in sustainability and ESG

The Mataripe Refinery also stands out for its focus on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices, which have been fundamental in Acelen’s strategy to reduce the environmental impact of operations and contribute to the sustainable development of the region. Among the main achievements is the 26% reduction in water consumption, saving 4.7 billion liters between December 2021 and August 2024. This saving is equivalent to the annual consumption of a city of 109 thousand inhabitants. Furthermore, the refinery reduced gas emissions by 46%, sulfur emissions by 87% and waste generation by 30% in 2023. “The company is a pioneer in the zero carbon footprint in maritime logistics, with the neutralization of two large oil cargoes from Africa”, adds Marcelo Lyra, vice president of Communication, Institutional Relations and ESG at the company.

These measures are part of Acelen’s ongoing effort to ensure its operations are aligned with global sustainability best practices. In addition to advances in reducing emissions and resource consumption, the company is at the forefront of developing renewable energy, with the creation of Acelen Renováveis. The unit will be responsible for the production of biofuels, such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and green diesel (HVO), from macaúba, a plant native to the Brazilian cerrado. A 161MW solar complex is also in the development phase in the semi-arid region of Bahia, which will meet part of the refinery’s energy demand and contribute to its decarbonization goals.

Social responsibility and community development

Acelen’s positive impact in Bahia is not limited to the environmental sphere. “In the social and educational areas, we have already invested more than R$25 million in actions and projects, such as Rede de valor, Jovem Aprendiz, Acelen Acender, Jornada Jovem Acelen, Acelera OSC, Edital Acelera OSC and Adote uma Turma – OSID. We managed to reach more than 30 thousand people, strengthening and strengthening our relationship with communities”, celebrates Lyra. Community Councils were created in Candeias, Madre de Deus and São Francisco do Conde, promoting constant dialogue and active listening to local demands.

These councils, made up of 83 advisors, have been fundamental in strengthening the company’s relationship with communities. In addition to the projects developed, mentioned above, health actions, such as gynecological and dermatological joint efforts, and environmental awareness activities, such as cleaning beaches and mangroves, have had a direct impact on the quality of life of the surrounding residents.

“Acelen considers ESG aspects as key business values, contributing even more to the sustainable, social and economic development of the country. It is no surprise that in almost three years of managing the Refinery it has already considerably reduced its environmental impact and expanded its social action in the region”

With more than seven decades of operation and a trajectory marked by innovation and socio-environmental responsibility, the Mataripe Refinery is ready to continue being one of the main players in the energy industry in Brazil. The coming years should be marked by more investments in research, development of new technologies and expansion of the positive impact on society and the environment.

“The refinery is 74 years old. We are in our best shape, with a modernized structure and ready for the challenges of the future. Our objective is to continue accelerating with excellence, safety and responsibility, combining productivity with a sustainable outlook”

Luiz de Mendonça,

CEO yes Acelen

Acelen’s plans include expanding biofuel production and advancing new renewable energy projects, reinforcing its role in the energy transition in Brazil and the world. With innovative management and committed to sustainable development, the Mataripe Refinery continues to lead the sector, impacting the economy, the environment and society in a significant and lasting way.
