Even though she is only 20 years old, Sofia Laura from Bahia has already had an established career as an international model for six years. The young woman, from the Massaranduba neighborhood, began to unpretentiously become interested in fashion at the age of 13, while she was still a student at Colégio Militar, without imagining that her talent and beauty would take her so far. What started as a ‘photo duel’ game on Facebook awakened in her the desire to study more about poses and catwalks. Encouraged by her family, she decided to participate in the Beleza Black contest, where, despite being inexperienced, she won third place.

“I saw beautiful girls and compared myself all the time. But my family encouraged me to continue, and I learned to model and improve my photos. Little by little, I began to understand that I had chances, that I could achieve it”, he recalls.

In 2019, Sofia participated in the selection process and was approved to model at Afro Fashion Day, an experience that she considers definitive for her awakening as a model: “It was a key turning point in my life, because here in Salvador we don’t have many opportunities. The Afro is every model’s dream. I, a black woman, from the favela, with few opportunities, participated. I take Afro as one of the most important moments of my career, because I realized I had potential, they saw something in me, there are several models who did the casting and I was one of those selected, so it was surreal for me”, he says. The penny only dropped when he stepped onto the catwalk. “I thought: go out there and give your name, because you got the opportunity you needed,” he adds. In 2020, despite the difficulties imposed by the pandemic, Sofia participated in another edition of AFD, this time for Fashion Filme.

Just before the 2019 AFD, a scout discovered Sofia through Instagram, which led to her signing her first international contract at the age of 14. Her first trip was to South Korea, accompanied by her mother, where she worked with the Puma brand. “When I received the news, I couldn’t believe it. I was very scared, because I was always very insecure. I had a lot of support from my family and they were the ones who gave me the encouragement to go,” he reveals. In Korea, Sofia had to deal with cultural shock and language difficulties, as she had not yet mastered English, but she claims that this first trip was fundamental for her maturity in the modeling profession.

Since then, Sofia has worked in Japan, Germany, Denmark, London, Paris and São Paulo, consolidating her name in international markets. At first, he alternated between months of work abroad and months of studies in Brazil, until he graduated from high school. Among the brands for which he has modeled and posed are Fendi (in a collaboration with Nicki Minaj), Samsung, LG, Roberto Cavalli, Jacquemus and Vivara.

Even with her success, Sofia reports the challenges she faces, especially when she feels homesick. “For me, the biggest difficulty is being away from the people I love. I am very attached to my family, my friends, my boyfriend. There’s this whole issue of you giving up being with them in important moments”, he shares. The young woman understands the distance as a necessary sacrifice to achieve her goals and repay her family’s love and encouragement: “I really hope that one day I can take my family with me so I can feel complete”, she says. The model also highlights the aesthetic pressure and intense competition in the market, highlighting the importance of good psychological and family support.

To young people who want to follow the same career, Sofia advises: “Don’t let fear dominate you. It’s always important to be there trying. It’s a profession in which we receive a lot of ‘no’s’, so we have to always be looking for the ‘yes’ . You really have to be more brave if you play. Oh, you participated in the casting and didn’t make it? I watched, I applauded and, the other year, there I was on the catwalk, being applauded.
