One of Botafogo’s heroes this season, Luiz Henrique returned to the net this Wednesday, in a 5-0 rout of Peñarol, which sent them through to the Copa Libertadores final. After the match, the striker was questioned about his alleged involvement in betting while he was still playing in Spain. He denied any relationship.
“It has nothing to do with that. I think they want to erase my shine, but I know they won’t be able to. I know that God is with me, my family is with me and none of that happened”, said Luiz Henrique, in an interview in the mixed zone of Engenhão, in Rio de Janeiro.
Last month, UOL revealed that the attacker received bank transfers worth R$40,000 from family members of Lucas Paquetá, a West Ham midfielder who is the target of an investigation by the English Football Association (FA). ). He should be heard next Wednesday by the Sports Betting CPI, along with his uncle, Bruno Tolentino, suspected of sending the Pix to the Botafogo athlete.
Luiz Henrique arrived at Botafogo this season. At the time, the club consulted the Royal Spanish Football Federation to find out if there were any ongoing investigations against the attacker and received the response that the case had been “investigated and archived”. However, this Wednesday, a few hours before the match against Peñarol, the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo published a report stating that the Spanish government had opened a new investigation against the attacker, in a letter sent to the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO) .
“(There is) nothing”, said Luiz Henrique, categorically, when asked if the deposit he received from Tolentino was related to betting, even during the period in which he played for Betis.
The striker’s performance this season led him to Dorival Júnior’s Brazilian team in qualifying matches this month against Chile and Peru. He scored two goals – one in each duel – coming from the bench in both games. In addition to him, Botafogo had two other players called up: left-back Alex Telles and striker Igor Jesus.
Botafogo will face the Uruguayans again next Wednesday, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at the Campeón del Siglo stadium, in Montevideo. With the advantage acquired in the first leg, the team led by coach Artur Jorge could lose by up to four goals to advance to the continental competition for the first time in the club’s history.
