“Today is a very sad day. I’m here in the United States and I heard the news of the death of our eternal champion Adilson ‘Maguila’ Rodrigues. A very sad day for national boxing. Maguila was certainly the greatest heavyweight in South America, he represented us very well. An athlete with enormous charisma, he conquered the world with boxing”, he lamented.

“I remember well that, when I was playing in the qualifiers for the World Championship in São Paulo, he went to the dressing room to greet us and wish us good luck. So, Maguila was a person who I had great affection for. For me, it was a great example of determination, of overcoming, of humility and Brazilian boxing worldwide is in mourning. May our eternal champion rest in peace”, he added.

Another fighter who mourned the boxer’s passing was Acelino Popó Freitas in his profile on social media. Popó published a video of an advertisement that the two made together more than 10 years ago and wrote: “Rest in peace, my eternal champion”.

The Brazilian Boxing Confederation also mourned the boxer’s death. “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of José Adilson Rodrigues dos Santos, known as Maguila, at the age of 66. We deeply regret the loss of one of the greatest Brazilian boxers in history […] The entire boxing community is in mourning, our condolences go out to the family and friends of our eternal heavyweight champion! ”, he said in a note.

Presenter Ana Maria Braga left a message in her stories about what happened: “Rest in peace, Maguila. My condolences to family and friends.”

Maguila was facing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), known as ‘dementia pugilistica’, a disease acquired as a result of a large number of blows to the head. The disease causes symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s.

The death was confirmed by Maguila’s wife, Irani Pinheiro, to Rede Record. The fighter lived at the Anjos de Deus Therapeutic Center, in Itu, in the state of São Paulo. After his health worsened, he was admitted to Hospital das Clínicas around 28 days ago.
