The renovation work on the Elevador Lacerda, one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Salvador and an important means of transport for the population, is already 80% complete. Scheduled for delivery in December, the requalification is being carried out by the Public Works Superintendence (Sucop), linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra), and by the Municipal Mobility Secretariat (Semob).
Semob has already replaced cabins 1 and 2 of the elevator with new ones, with new lighting, air conditioning and rescue engine, necessary equipment in the event of problems with the main engine. At the moment, cabins 3 and 4 are being exchanged for greater convenience for elevator users.
Sucop is carrying out all other structural interventions and has already removed the old coverings, installed new coverings on the walls, installed new frames, renewed the electrical and hydraulic installations and finished some details, such as window sills and skirting boards. , marble countertops, internal and external painting and restoration of the facade.
Currently, the part under Sucop’s responsibility is in the process of completing the coverings and installing metal structures, including guardrails, access stairs to the floors and lighting profiles. The next steps are the waterproofing services for the slabs and the installation of the air conditioning system in the Cidade Alta and Baixa lobbies. On the facade, the restoration team works on finishing with reinforced mortar. The work also includes the renovation of the substation, with replacement of the generator and renovation of the transformers.
Orlando Castro, superintendent of Sucop, highlighted the importance of requalifying the Lacerda Elevator, one of Salvador’s main postcards: “Each stage of the work has been carried out with great precision, ensuring that this historical heritage is restored with the highest quality. This way, the population will be able to count on a completely revitalized, more modern and safe space, maintaining the essence of our cultural symbol.
One of the new features planned in the project will be the release of balconies located on the side spaces of the Cidade Alta access, in Praça Municipal. To this end, the A Cubana ice cream shop, installed in the Lacerda Elevator since the end of the 1930s and which is still a reference linked to the monument, will be relocated to the access hall where the Tourist Service Center currently operates. This will allow us to restore the original open balcony character of the side spaces, while also improving the flow of movement for elevator users.
Ticket offices will be implemented at the entrances to Praça Municipal and Comércio, where passengers will be able to pay the fare to board the elevator, eliminating the charge at the turnstile. The idea is to avoid the formation of long queues to access the elevators, especially during peak hours and periods of high demand.
Furthermore, the Model of Salvador, which presents the reduced city in great detail, will be located next to the elevator in an area of approximately 100 square meters so that the population and tourists can check each point of the city, the topography, the neighborhoods, transfer stations, Arena Fonte Nova, roads and tourist attractions, among other symbolic elements of the capital.
The Mobility Secretary, Fabrizzio Müller, highlights that in addition to being one of the main tourist attractions in Salvador, the Lacerda Elevator is one of the most important historical equipment for the city. “It was one of the main responsible for the development of our city, and today it is one of the most used means of transport by Bahians and tourists who travel between the upper and lower cities. This requalification will further highlight the grandeur of this equipment.”
The Lacerda Elevator restoration and requalification project involves the technical updating of the infrastructure (air conditioning, electrical, security and fire system, among others), associated with an aesthetic treatment that reduces as much as possible the visual impact and internal space of the building. lift.
In this way, the ceiling linings will be replaced with technical solutions with less interference, while the coverings will have highly resistant and durable materials. The flooring of the stations will be made of non-slip brown granite.
The Cidade Baixa station lobby will have new skylights and walls partially covered with handcrafted white tile panels. On the promenade and Cidade Alta elevator station, the walls will receive acrylic paint in light beige color, in addition to frames replaced by a new system that references the original compositions from 1930, however, now with aluminum frames with white paint and movable venetian blinds. glass, which can be opened to allow natural ventilation.
The name “Lacerda”, existing since 1930 at the top of the building’s facade facing Municipal Square, will be restored and adequately illuminated. In Cidade Baixa, in turn, new metal railings will be created over the three access doors, with the words “Entrada”, “Lacerda” and “Exit”.
“What the City Hall is doing, in fact, is recovering the original characteristics and architecture of the elevator, when it was expanded in 1930. We had to study the history of this monument, analyze how it was designed. We pored over all the documentation from the construction in 1873 until today. We carried out a detailed study of the entire history of Lacerda to be able to draw up the best project”, declared Tânia Scofield, president of FMLF.
One of the most important means of transport between Cidade Alta and Cidade Baixa, the Elevador Lacerda was the first elevator in the world to serve as public transport and the highest of its kind, when it was inaugurated on December 8, 1873. Initially, It was called Conceição da Praia Hydraulic Elevator, in honor of the patron saint of Bahia. Before the suspension of services for the recent works, the lift transported, on average, 6.5 thousand people per day, operating from Monday to Sunday. Opening hours are from 7am to 10pm, from Monday to Saturday, and from 7am to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays.
