With 50.92% of the votes (80,626), Luiz Caetano (PT) was elected mayor of Camaçari, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador, during the second round this Sunday (27). Councilor Flávio Matos (União Brasil) had 49.08% of the votes (77,724). In a fierce dispute, the PT member won the elections with a difference of 2,902 votes.

“The people brought this victory to Camaçari, to Bahia and to Brazil,” said Caetano. “It is now up to me and Pastor Déa to build a management of qualification and training for our people so that, increasingly, we can take advantage of the opportunities that the federal government and Jerônimo’s government are giving us for the reconstruction of Camaçari”, added Caetano at a press conference after counting the votes. He was accompanied by Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues and the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, both from PT.

An old acquaintance of Camaçari residents, Caetano administered the city for the fourth time. He governed the municipality for three terms (from 1985 to 1988; from 2005 to 2008; and from 2009 to 2012). In addition, he was a municipal councilor twice and a state deputy.

The PT member must now work to govern with a City Council that is mostly made up of opposition councilors. In the first round, Flávio Matos’ base elected 14 of the 23 councilors who will form the municipal Legislature from January 2025 – five of which are from União Brasil. The former mayor, in turn, won nine seats, also with five from the same party.

“The Caetano government will have to open up to incorporate demands from councilors in these neighborhoods. At the same time, a government that does not have a majority in the Chamber will make an effort to mobilize public opinion more”, analyzed political scientist Joviniano Neto, professor at the Federal University of Bahia (Ufba).

The elected vice-mayor is Pastor Déa (PSB). She is the administrator and founder of Instituto Mãezona, which serves people in vulnerable situations.
