The Court of Justice of Bahia (TJBA) received the President of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the National Council of Justice (CNJ), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, to hold the 1st Simple Language Seminar – Creating bridges between the citizen and the justice. The meeting between entities took place on Monday morning (21).

With a packed auditorium, the Minister, alongside the President of the TJBA, Judge Cynthia Maria Pina Resende, contextualized the development of language and spoke about the democratization of access to knowledge, information and public space with the internet.

“We are living in a new time: those who know what they are talking about speak in a simple and intelligible way. We must not transform language into an instrument of power, into a way of excluding people who do not have the key to that knowledge from public debate”, warned the Minister.

Simplifying decisions further, using fewer technical terms, reducing the use of Latin and increasing the use of Portuguese were some of the points mentioned by the president of the TJBA about how Simple Language has been implemented in the Bahian Judiciary. “In order for citizens to get closer to Justice, we need to speak in a way that they understand,” he added.

The Seminar also featured a lecture by the STF’s Multimedia Coordinator, Fábia Galvão, responsible for managing the Supreme Court’s social media. “The TJBA, for sure, is taking the lead, because this story of simple language is a path of no return, it is the main way we have of connecting with the population, so that citizens feel entitled to rights, so that they understand that this is a place she can turn to”, he declared.

Also during the Seminar, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso received the Medal of Judiciary Merit of the State of Bahia from President Cynthia Resende and Judge Maria de Lourdes Pinho Medauar.

The medal was created to honor national or foreign personalities, for their merits and relevant services provided to the Judiciary of the State or Country. The 1st Vice-President of the Bahian Court, Judge João Bôsco de Oliveira Seixas, presented the President of the STF with a statuette of Jurist Ruy Barbosa.
